With the rise in popularity of data analytics over the last few years, you'd think more and more people would be embracing it, and utilizing it as the useful tool it has already proven to be. But as with any trending, popular field, it can sometimes erect walls between itself and the curious. Part of this, to be sure, is the result of early practitioners coming up with all sorts of jargon and arcane terms to make the field seem more complex than it really is.
And part of it may simply be an assumption that any field that claims such dramatic results can't be grasped through mere intuition, and that there must be a learning curve--not to mention a few twists and turns--that the knowledgeable few have had to work their way through.
But the truth is that data analytics is not complicated. Insights through data
In a recent article on Business.com, Senior Analyst Mark Fairlie illustrated this very well in his 'How Data Analytics Affects Small Businesses' piece. In the section entitled How to get started with data analytics in your business, he lays out the following best practices for effective data analysis:
This is an excellent, no-nonsense summary of how to properly undertake a data analytics project. With a few extreme exceptions, there will be nothing you and your team can't immediately grasp.
If a data analytics package contains data or graphics that aren't immediately clear, there's a good chance it is not as well organized as it should be.
This helps illustrate one of the core truths about data analytics, which is that a well defined, visual representation of numbers--achieved through consistent and focused scrutiny--can help make key trends immediately obvious, and allow us to see important and relevant patterns that mere numerical analysis can fail to reveal.
Data analytics, when approached with dedicated focus and consistency, changes from a seemingly daunting task into a powerful ally in decision-making. By systematically applying common sense and a structured approach, businesses can unlock insights that drive success. The key lies in maintaining a steady commitment to understanding and interpreting basic data, which in turn reveals actionable trends and opportunities. This disciplined approach not only demystifies the process but also empowers businesses to leverage data as a strategic tool, ultimately positioning them to win in competitive markets.
